  3. I do interviews for my company on occasion. Almost everything mentioned from this link is accurate. I ask and expect answers on 90% of the things listed from this during the technical interview process (which is where I'm brought in, as I'm an engineer and my Manager asked me to do the technical interview).

  4. Most of this is standard fare, but the questions about administrative distances and PDU destination addresses are a little absurd. When I'm asked more than just one or two generic trivia questions in an interview, I start questioning the employer.

  5. @ FriendlyDespot

I wouldn't call it a direct red flag. Put yourself in their shoes. They could have hired someone who was able to hit two general questions then been promptly burned by him after they put him in front of live gear. Or they want to make sure you already have a very very good working knowledge of BGP. I mean, sure the job posting said "Good understanding of implementing and maintaining of BGP." but how can they really determine that if you're just answering a few generic questions?
Now, if you're applying for a NE spot and they're asking you desktop support or group policy questions... Okay, maybe that's a flag.

  10. Nice Post.

If you have a CCNA, I'll expect you to know the following:

Tell me about the OSI model. Describe what would happen to a packet starting at layer 7, working its way down the stack and back up again on the opposite side.

How does DHCP work, or if you're unsure of that, describe to me the difference between TCP and UDP. What protocol does a ping fall into? How does TCP windowing work? Why have a windowing mechanism? Which does voice and video fit into? Why?

My customer wants to know which routing protocol they should implement. Tell me your favorite and compare it to another routing protocol. Where would either fit into a network that you designed? Does one have a place at all?

How many bits in an IPv6 address? How does IPv6 compare to IPv4? Why are we running out of addresses in the IPv4 space? Do you think that will ever happen in the IPv6 space? Why aren't we moving to using IPv6 more often?

How does an access list work? Why is there an implicit deny at the end of one when I look at some devices?

How do you work with multiple projects on your plate at once? If you have a project manager navigating those projects for you, how do you best utilize that person to help you make progress in an efficient manner.

Tell me about your customer service background, how do you go above and beyond what any other engineer could do for me?

How do you handle a contract and out of scope projects? Do you think we should give the customer more than what they pay for?

  11. Shabeer, excellent job mate. For having worked in this industry for quite long, I've stumbled upon some of these basic questions and have lost my way ... silly but its true especially after you've been in a job for more than 5 years without having to brush up on those basics. Every things counts in interview I appreciate that now. Good luck to all.
